Vaccines developed against the disease are safe and effective, although they do not provide one hundred percent protection. But given that in some countries there is not enough vaccine supply, not everyone has a vaccine, and the effect of vaccines decreases after a while, “non-pharmaceutical” methods are also of great importance in preventing the disease, which has been transmitted to more than 255 million people and taken more than 5 million lives. These include wearing masks, maintaining social distancing, and washing hands frequently.

Research by Monash Universities in Australia and Edinburgh Universities in Scotland has found that wearing a mask is the most effective public health measure in an epidemic. The study of scientists who conducted the first research on the effectiveness of the three protection measures mentioned above was published in The BMJ.

According to the scientists who wrote the article on the results, it is necessary to wear masks, maintain social distancing and continue washing hands, as well as vaccination calendars.

Analyzing the results of 30 different studies, the team determined that wearing a mask reduced the incidence of Covid-19 by 53 percent and maintaining social distancing by 25 percent. The rate for washing hands was also 53 percent. However, noting that the number of increases related to hand washing is very small, the researchers stressed that this statistic is not as “significant” as the other two.
