The UK Health Safety Agency (UKHSA) has announced that 6 children under the age of 10 died in England and Wales in the last week due to invasive GAS disease caused by the bacterium after being diagnosed with Strep A. The disease, which has not yet been found in Turkey, has caused global unease.

Group A strep bacteria can cause many infections, from minor illnesses to deadly diseases. However, fatal diseases had been rare until now due to the bacteria.

WHAT IS STREP A?

Strep A or Group A streptococcus (GAS) is a type of bacteria found in the throat and on the skin and does not cause any symptoms in most people. However, it can cause different diseases of the nose, throat and lungs.

Symptoms of Strep A include pain when swallowing, fever, swollen tonsils with white spots, swollen Decubitus glands, high fever, or a skin rash.
