The police department investigated 106 thousand social media users last year.

The General Directorate of Security (EGM) has been patrolling social media as well as the streets for several years. According to the information compiled by media from EGM’s 2021 report, 106 thousand social media users were surveyed under the name of ‘virtual patrol’. According to the report, ‘criminal sharing’ such as ‘insulting the president’ was detected in 46,646 of these accounts.

In fact, Turkey is said to be among the leading countries with highest number of sentenced citizens in the world for having insulted the president.
