Tiered Natural Gas Pricing to Take Effect for the First Time This Winter

"Share this post on social media, spread the news"

A new tiered pricing system for natural gas will come into effect for the first time this winter in Turkey, potentially affecting around 2.8 million households. Based on data shared on media, subscribers who exceed their city’s monthly consumption threshold will be charged the higher rate for their entire monthly consumption, rather than just the amount exceeding the limit.

The system, introduced on 4 April 2026, is expected to affect approximately 12% of Turkey’s 21.8 million natural gas subscribers. Around 19 million subscribers are expected to continue benefiting from the existing support arrangements.

Two Different Natural Gas Prices

The new system introduces two pricing tiers:

A separate supported tariff will apply to the families of martyrs and war veterans.

November Consumption Thresholds in Five Major Cities

The monthly consumption limits announced for November vary considerably between cities.

CityMonthly consumption threshold
Istanbul101.71 m³
Ankara161.63 m³
Izmir61.43 m³
Antalya29.44 m³
Diyarbakir74.62 m³

The differences reflect varying natural gas consumption levels across the country, including differences in climate and heating requirements.

Exceeding the Limit Could Increase Your Bill

One particularly important feature of the system is that exceeding the monthly threshold means the higher rate applies to the entire month’s consumption, not just the amount above the limit.

For example, a household in Istanbul that consumes 105 cubic metres in November would be charged the Tier 2 rate for all 105 cubic metres if it exceeds the applicable threshold of 101.71 cubic metres.

At the published rates, this could make a substantial difference to the monthly bill.

What Does This Mean for Households?

With the heating season approaching, households should pay attention to their monthly natural gas consumption and the threshold applicable to their city.

The limits vary geographically and may change from month to month. Even a relatively small increase beyond the threshold could result in the higher rate being applied to all the gas consumed during that billing period.

For households across Turkey, understanding how the new system works could help avoid unexpected increases in winter heating bills.
