Topkapi Palace is located in one of the oldest historical areas of Istanbul. Situated on the historic Istanbul Peninsula, between the Sea of Marmara, the Bosphorus, and the Golden Horn, the palace is one of Istanbul’s iconic structures. Built on a 700,000 square meter area on the Eastern Roman acropolis at Sarayburnu, Topkapi Palace served as the center of administration, education, and arts for the empire, as well as the residence of the sultans, for almost four centuries until the reign of Sultan Abdülmecid, the 31st Ottoman sultan.

After the imperial family moved to Dolmabahce Palace in the mid-19th century, Topkapi Palace was abandoned but retained its historical significance and value.

After the founding of the Republic of Turkey, Topkapi Palace was converted into a museum on April 3, 1924, becoming the first museum of the Republic. Today, Topkapi Palace, excluding Gülhane Park, covers an area of about 350,000 square meters. With its buildings, architecture, collections, and nearly 300,000 archival documents, it is one of the largest museum-palaces in the world.
