Trump Threatens Putin with ‘Severe Consequences’ Over Ukraine War

In a bold statement ahead of a high-stakes meeting, U.S. President Donald Trump warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin could face “severe consequences” if he refused to cooperate on ending the war in Ukraine.

Speaking about the upcoming summit set for August 15 in Alaska, Trump made it clear that he was prepared to take strong action if diplomacy fails.

When asked whether he would impose sanctions should no agreement be reached with Putin, Trump responded, “Yes. I won’t say now what those sanctions will be, but there will be severe consequences for Russia.”

Backed by European Leaders and Zelensky

Trump’s remarks came right after a virtual meeting with European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. According to a report by the Associated Press, the leaders felt reassured after Trump made it clear that achieving a ceasefire in Ukraine was his top priority.

“Our meeting was very productive — I’d rate it a ten out of ten,” Trump said. He added that he and the other leaders reviewed the key issues they planned to raise in efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Potential Second Summit on the Horizon

Looking beyond the Alaska meeting, Trump signaled openness to organizing a second summit — this time including both Putin and Zelensky — if the initial talks go well. “There’s a strong chance of a follow-up meeting. If they want me to be involved, I’ll be there,” he stated.

However, Trump also made it clear that if his talks with Putin didn’t yield results, the idea of a second meeting would be off the table.

This high-level diplomacy marks one of the most serious U.S. efforts to broker peace in Ukraine since the conflict began, with Trump positioning himself as a key negotiator between Moscow and Kyiv.
