U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he was “strongly considering” imposing significant sanctions on Russia until a final peace agreement is reached.
Today, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukraine and the U.S. would meet next week in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to discuss ending the war with Russia.
A few hours after Zelensky’s announcement, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that Ukraine’s natural gas and energy facilities had been hit with long-range missiles and drones.
According to Associated Press, Russia fired 67 missiles at Ukraine from land, air, and sea, and launched 194 drones, shooting down 39 Ukrainian drones. At least 10 people, including one child, were injured in the attack.
The Ukrainian Air Force stated that Russia’s missiles primarily had targeted Ukraine’s natural gas extraction facilities, marking the sixth attack on Ukrainian facilities in the past 20 days.
Trump, in a post on his Truth Social account, pointed to the continuing Russian attacks and threatened sanctions if peace talks did not lead to an agreement.
Trump’s statement was as follows:
“Based on the fact that Russia is currently ‘striking’ Ukraine, I am strongly considering applying extensive banking sanctions and customs duties to Russia until a ceasefire and a final peace agreement are reached.”
