Turkey has once again secured its position as the leading international holiday destination for Russian travelers, with the latest industry data showing that demand remains strong for the 2026 summer season despite shifting regional travel patterns and evolving geopolitical conditions.

According to data compiled from the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR), overseas holiday bookings made by Russian travelers by the end of May increased by 8 percent compared with the same period last year. Turkey accounted for 57 percent of all international summer reservations, comfortably maintaining its leadership in one of the country’s most important inbound tourism markets.

Turkey Continues to Dominate the Russian Market

Reservations for holidays in Turkey increased by 5 percent year on year, while the country ranked as the best-selling destination across all major Russian tour operators included in the ATOR survey.

Industry forecasts indicate that between 2.9 million and 3 million Russian tourists are expected to visit Turkey between June and August. Antalya is expected to remain the primary destination for beach holidays, while Istanbul continues to attract visitors seeking cultural experiences, shopping and international flight connections. The Aegean coast also continues to receive steady demand.

Beach tourism remains the driving force behind outbound travel from Russia. ATOR estimates that between 95 and 97 percent of all overseas package holidays booked for summer 2026 are focused on seaside destinations, reinforcing Turkey’s competitive advantage through its extensive resort infrastructure and well-established tourism services.

Regional Developments Shift Travel Demand

Market conditions in competing destinations have further strengthened Turkey’s position.

ATOR noted that the United Arab Emirates, which previously represented a notable share of Russian outbound holiday sales, experienced a significant decline following regional tensions in the Gulf and temporary restrictions affecting tourism sales.

As bookings to the UAE slowed, a large share of demand shifted toward alternative destinations. Turkey emerged as one of the principal beneficiaries, increasing its share of June holiday bookings from 37.2 percent a year earlier to 39.4 percent. Egypt, Vietnam and China also recorded increased interest from Russian travelers.

The association described Turkey as the clear market leader during the June booking period, highlighting that much of the increase reflected changing travel preferences following disruptions in the Gulf region.

European Travel Challenges Support Turkey’s Competitive Position

Developments in the European travel market have also contributed to Turkey’s continued appeal.

ATOR’s analysis, based on European Commission data, found that although Schengen visa refusal rates declined during 2025, the availability of multiple-entry visas decreased substantially. Russian tour operators report that most travelers now receive visas valid only for specific travel dates, reducing flexibility for repeat or spontaneous trips within Europe.

The introduction of the European Union’s Entry/Exit System has added further administrative procedures for travelers. Combined with ongoing geopolitical tensions and reduced travel flexibility, these developments have encouraged many Russian tourists to choose destinations offering easier entry requirements.

Turkey continues to benefit from visa-free travel arrangements for Russian citizens, extensive direct flight connections and a mature tourism industry capable of serving millions of international visitors each year.

Tourism Industry Outlook Remains Positive

Russia has consistently ranked among Turkey’s largest inbound tourism markets, providing an important source of visitors for hotels, airlines, tour operators and tourism-related businesses.

The latest booking data suggests that Turkey’s combination of accessibility, competitive pricing, established tourism infrastructure and strong brand recognition continues to support sustained demand from Russian travelers.

With millions of visitors expected throughout the peak summer season, the Russian market is likely to remain one of the key contributors to Turkey’s tourism industry in 2026, reinforcing the country’s position as one of the world’s leading international holiday destinations.
