A Historic Final in Thailand
Turkey’s Women’s National Volleyball Team reached a milestone in Thai territory, playing in the FIVB Women’s World Volleyball Championship final for the very first time in history. In an electrifying clash, the Sultans of the Net fell short against Italy with a narrow 3-2 defeat, finishing the tournament as world runner-up.
Although the gold slipped away, the silver medal marked a monumental moment — the very first World Championship medal in Turkish volleyball history.
Melissa Vargas: Top Scorer of the Tournament
One of the brightest stars of the championship was Melissa Vargas. Representing both Fenerbahçe Opet and the national team, Vargas scored an impressive 152 points throughout the competition, earning the title of Top Scorer of the Tournament.
A Battle Set by Set
The final itself was a rollercoaster of emotions.
Turkey dropped the opening set 23-25 but bounced back in dominant fashion with a commanding 25-15 win in the second. The third set was fiercely balanced, ultimately claimed by Italy 24-26. Refusing to surrender, the Sultans of the Net powered through the fourth with a 25-19 victory, forcing a decisive fifth set. In the end, Italy sealed the championship with a 15-9 win in the final set.
Awards and Honors
The individual brilliance of the Turkish squad did not go unnoticed. Captain Eda Erdem Dündar was named Best Middle Blocker of the 2025 FIVB World Championship, while Melissa Vargas added another accolade as Best Opposite Spiker.
Meanwhile, Italy’s standout and Turkey’s newest club signing, Alessia Orro, walked away with both MVP and Best Setter awards after steering her team to the world title.
