"Share this post on social media, spread the news"

Turkey’s rich culinary heritage is fueling the growth of gastronomy tourism. In 2024, Turkey welcomed 62.2 million tourists and earned $61.1 billion from tourism. Of this, 19.4% came from food and beverage spending. With 34 gastronomy museums and over 360 food festivals held across the country, interest in Turkish culinary tourism continues to rise.

Development of Gastronomy Tourism

Gürkan Boztepe, President of the Gastronomy Tourism Association, says they began promoting gastronomy tourism in Turkey about 10 years ago. Efforts included organizing events from New York to Dubai to promote Turkish cuisine, in collaboration with government ministries.

UNESCO Recognition of Turkish Cities

Gaziantep, Hatay, Afyonkarahisar, and Kayseri have been included in UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network for gastronomy. This recognition has elevated the international visibility of Turkey’s culinary culture.

Foreign Interest & Street Food

Italian and Japanese tourists show strong interest in Turkish cuisine. Michelin-starred chefs often visit local places like Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar and are fascinated by traditional dishes such as menemen. Boztepe highlights the cultural depth and storytelling behind Turkish street food.

Flavorful Cities & Signature Products

Local specialties such as Gaziantep’s home-cooked dishes, Hatay’s mezze, Aegean herbs, Black Sea tea and hazelnuts, and Aydın’s figs are among the standout regional foods. However, Boztepe notes that these are not yet effectively promoted abroad.

Challenges & Recommendations

According to Boztepe, the key lies not in the number of dishes but in how they are packaged and presented. He emphasizes the need for improved standards in service, English-speaking staff, hygiene, and consistent presentation. Although restaurant quality is high, pricing strategies need to be carefully managed.

Conclusion

With its rich flavors and cultural depth, Turkish cuisine holds immense potential. Through better promotion and strategic planning, Turkey’s share in the global gastronomy tourism market is set to grow significantly in the coming years.
