Turks have a very rich culture in terms of handicrafts. They are in possession of traditional handcrafts that have been going on for thousands of years since the time they lived in Central Asia. To provide an example, the art of weaving carpets rugs and KILIMS is among the most popular handicrafts you can come across in Turkey.
One can see kilims with oriental / authentic designs almost in every house in Turkey. They are from different regions of the country and therefore have characteristic patterns resembling the region.
The earliest records of the rugs are seen in the Neolithic pottery of CATAL HOYUK around 7000 BC. This settlement which is located in the middle of the Anatolian region, south-east of Konya is known to be among the earliest settlements found in the world.
In the excavation at this spot archeologists found carbonized fabric and also kilim fragments painted on the walls of the houses, with geometric and stylized forms, mainly. On the other hand, the excavations in the town are only at the beginning stage and there is a long way to go before everything is unearthed.
