Regarding the subspecies of Omicron variant known as BA.2, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ceyhan said ”It is especially severe in children and the elderly.” Denmark had stated earlier that the lower variant was seen in almost half of the cases in the country.
The World Health Organization (WHO) had explained earlier BA.2 had now become dominant in 10 countries, accounting for the majority of cases.
Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ceyhan, Head of the Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Hacettepe Faculty of Medicine, noted that Turkey had not yet begun to experience the effect of the 2 variant.
Prof. Dr. Ceyhan also shared following:
* The new variant of omicron, BA2, is more severe than omicron, especially in children and the elderly.
* Hospital admissions for children as a result of BA2 in the UK are twice as high as for Omicron. High mortality has been going on in Denmark for six weeks now.
