TurkStat (TUIK / Turkish Statistics Institute) has announced that Turkey’s economy has grown by 21.7 percent in the second quarter of the year. In regards to this development, a prominent economist said, ” We have grown so much because citizens are in debt.”

According to second-quarter GDP data released by TUIK, the Turkish economy grew by 21.7 percent compared to the same period last year. Economists had expected growth of more than 20 percent in the second quarter, driven by the base effect. On the other hand, TUIK also revised its first-quarter growth to 7.2 percent. First-quarter growth was reported at 7 percent.

Turkey shrank 9.9 percent in the second quarter of last year, when the effects of the pandemic were most severe.

GROWTH IS NOT QUALIFIED

Same economist evaluated the growth figures in said TV interview.

He said, “We have grown so much because citizens are in debt. A more unstable and indebted economic order awaits us at the next stage of the country. This growth, which is not qualified, indicates that the middle class is disappearing. 10 million people in Turkey are unemployed. We are through a period where the rich are richer and the poor are poorer.”
