Tense Hours Around the Gulf of Antalya
Antalya has been going through a period of increased seismic activity. Shortly after earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Osman Bektaş warned that the region “may produce a 6.4 magnitude earthquake,” consecutive tremors hit the area. Two quakes occurring within about 10 hours naturally caused concern among residents.
Bektaş’s Warning and First Reactions
In his earlier evaluation, Bektaş highlighted the seismic movement created by the interaction of the Aegean–Cyprus arc with the Gulf of Antalya. He pointed out that since 2020, a series of 4–5 magnitude earthquakes—especially around Alanya—have been linked to the Isparta Angle fault system, stressing that the region should remain vigilant.
A Wave of Earthquakes Soon After the Warning
Just hours after his remarks, earthquakes began striking one after another.
AFAD reported the most recent tremor at 4.9, while Kandilli Observatory listed it as 5.2. The quake was felt lightly along the coastline, although areas with weak soil and tall buildings experienced it more noticeably.
“This Could Be a Foreshock” – Bektaş’s Latest Assessment
Speaking live on SÖZCÜ TV, Prof. Dr. Bektaş said the quake could potentially be a precursor to a larger one. “The next 4–5 hours are very critical,” he warned.
He added that ground conditions vary across the region, meaning the shaking may feel stronger in certain areas, and advised people to stay in open spaces whenever possible.
Activity Continued Through the Night
The earthquake activity didn’t begin today—tremors have been ongoing since last night.
A 4.3 magnitude quake hit Konyaaltı late at night.
Later, another tremor occurred off the coast of Kemer, measured at 3.6 by AFAD and 3.8 by Kandilli.
