UK’s Starmer: We Will Recognize Palestine if Israel Fails to Act

Pressure Builds on Israel Over Gaza Crisis

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has issued a clear ultimatum to Israel: take concrete steps toward peace, or the UK will recognize the State of Palestine this September. Speaking after a cabinet meeting focused on the crisis in Gaza, Starmer expressed frustration over the lack of meaningful progress and stressed the urgency of addressing the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in the region.

Starmer acknowledged that air-dropped aid into Gaza had begun, but said it was not nearly enough. He emphasized that at least 500 aid trucks needed to enter Gaza daily to meet basic humanitarian needs. The Prime Minister called for an immediate and sustained effort to de-escalate tensions and to create a path forward for long-term peace.

A Two-State Solution at Risk

Starmer made it clear that the UK’s patience was wearing thin. With hopes for a two-state solution rapidly fading, he said “now is the time to act decisively”. Recognizing Palestine, he said, would send a powerful message and potentially help revive prospects for peace.

He stated that unless Israel agreed to a ceasefire and committed to serious, long-term steps toward a two-state solution, the UK would officially recognize the State of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly in September.

International Pressure on the Rise

This is the strongest language yet from Starmer’s government regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict. His comments reflect growing international pressure on Israel to change course, especially as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza deepens and diplomatic efforts remain stalled.

By linking recognition of Palestine to Israel’s behavior, Starmer is setting a new tone in British foreign policy—one that may reshape the UK’s role in Middle East peace efforts in the months to come.
