The mandatory winter tire regulation in Turkey will take effect starting December 1. “While it is only obligatory for commercial vehicles“, those who fail to comply will face a fine of 4,069 TL. So, what should you pay attention to when buying winter tires?
From December 1 to April 1, all commercial vehicles must use winter tires. Although there is no legal obligation for private vehicles, winter tires should definitely be used in temperatures below 7°C. In some cases, local authorities may make winter tires mandatory for private vehicles if conditions require.
When winter tires are mentioned, snowy regions often come to mind. However, these tires are designed to adapt to cold weather conditions. Compared to regular tires, they provide better grip and road-holding performance in low temperatures.
What to Consider When Buying Winter Tires
Winter tires can be identified by the “M+S” or “Snow and Mountain” symbols, which indicate their suitability for winter conditions. The “3 Peak Mountain Snowflake” (3PMSF) symbol means the tire has met the necessary criteria in tests. Tires without the 3PMSF marking cannot be sold as winter tires. While the M+S mark is added by the manufacturer, tires that pass the 3PMSF tests carry the “Snow and Mountain” symbol.
Winter tires are often used on dry and wet roads more than on snow. Therefore, choose tires that perform well not only on snow but also on dry or wet roads. Most Important: Choosing the Right Size for Your Vehicle
Whether summer or winter, the most crucial factor when buying tires is selecting the right size for your vehicle. Tire sizes are indicated on the tire, such as 175/65 R15, where:
R15: Diameter in inches, 175: Tire width in millimeters, 65: Sidewall height as a percentage of the width
While different sizes may fit, it is always best to follow the manufacturer’s recommended specifications. If the tire size on your vehicle is unreadable or has been replaced with second-hand or non-standard tires, you can find the correct measurements on the inside of the driver’s door.
