Yeşilüzümlü (with green grapes) Village, a slow city candidate village in Fethiye, that has made a name for itself with the International Morel (Morchella / special type of mushroom) Festival in the last 3 years.
The village is located about 16 kilometers from Fethiye and 700 meters above sea level… A quiet surrounding in the pine forests on the outskirts of the Ancient City of Kadyanda…
A VILLAGE WHICH TOOK ITS NAME FROM GREEN GRAPES
The village, formerly known as Üzümlü (with grapes), took its name from the smell and taste of the grape gardens in the plains, and when the color of the lush green plains surrounding the town, pine trees, forests and grape gardens was added, it became green Yeşilüzümlü (green Üzümlü).
In addition to rare and many other plant species such as orchids in the pine forests, many mammals such as eagles, hawks, jays and many birds, wild rabbits, wild pigs, bats, squirrels, turtles and wolves are also a part of the environment… and goes without saying green grapes are also a part of the environment.
100-200 YEAR OLD STONE HOUSES
Most of the houses are 100-200 years old stone and wooden buildings These houses have survived to present time as a result of the continuation of life in these buildings. The local people attach great importance to the beauty of their towns, their history, their natural riches, their tranquility and the preservation of this peace.
The people of Yeşilüzümlü (Green Grapes) , whose historical roots go back to the nomads and even the Lycians and Romans (supposedly), are very friendly to visitors, foreigners, tourists and each other.
MUSHROOM FESTIVAL CONTRIBUTES TO PROMOTION OF THE VILLAGE AND MUSHROOM SPECIES
The aim of the mushroom festival is to promote morel and other mushroom species, the sought-after delicacy of world cuisines, to draw attention to the richness of the region, their economic value, their collection and conscious consumption, and to contribute to the development of ecological tourism.
During the festival, mushroom experts from Turkey and abroad, faculty members from universities and students hold seminars and talks in the village coffee house. Experts give useful and valuable information about mushrooms and picking the right mushrooms. Various mushroom picking trips are organized during the festival.
During the festival, one can buy local people’s handicraft products, souvenirs, organic products, poppy syrup, poppy jam, canned artichokes, strawberry syrup, strawberry jam, artichoke jam, olive paste and mushrooms from local people selling their products at stalls in the village square.
FAMOUS FOR ITS WEAVING CALLED “DASTAR”
Yeşilüzümlü is famous for its weavings called “DASTAR”. There is almost no house in this charming village that has not been touched by the iconic Dastar; Dastar, woven using traditional methods, is made using cotton, wool or silk threads. Every piece touched is different – there is no other one like it.
One can see weaving shops in stone buildings dating back to the period, and saleswomen who offer various unique weaving products woven on the boats using cotton wool or silk threads called dastar. Furthermore fashion shows, art exhibitions, music concerts, live music bars, wine houses are among other points of interest for a visitor.
The region is said to be home to nearly 300 Orchids and other plant species. There are supposedly around 170-180 Orchid species in Turkey, meaning this country is one of the richest countries in this region in terms of Orchids.
On the other hand, winemaking has recently begun to develop in this area. Homemade winemaking is also quite popular. The locals have turned an old house into a “Wine House” where onecan taste homemade wine, grape juice and home-cooked food. There are also local olives, olive oil, vinegar, figs and many different products.
PLACES TO VISIT IN THE REGION
KADYANDA: The foundation of the city, whose name is mentioned as Kadawanti in Lycian inscriptions, dates back to 3000 BC. It is a different Lycian city with its location overlooking Fethiye from a bird’s eye view and with its Cyclops city walls, which gave its name to a wall construction technique. The city survived during the much later Roman period, allowing European historians to describe it as a Roman city. The Cyclops-style city walls, underground cisterns, theatre, running track, Turkish bath, tombs and its high location partially overlooking the Gulf of Fethiye make the city even more worth seeing.
