German Chancellor Angela Merkel declared that she would not be nominated for party leadership at the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) congress to be held in December.

Merkel has been the chairperson of her party since 2000. The CDU plans to hold the general presidential elections in December. It is reported that European markets were shaken by this news.

Angela Merkel has displayed a very active and strong performance during her service. Consequently she has been one of the few leaders to have deserved respect and trust of most parties globally. She has carried her country even further to the leadership position of Europe in an undeniable manner. The question is “who will be her successor” as we have not observed a German politician recently that would make people think “Well, here’s our new leader after Merkel leaves”. This certainly could be a blow to Germany’s leadership challenge with France and the more so at a time when EU has been going through major issues/conflicts with Russia.
