KARAHANTEPE PROJECT TURKEY 1

Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy announced a significant step in the Future Heritage Project initiated at Karahantepe. Minister Ersoy stated that the project involved constructing a protective roof over the excavation site to preserve and carry the millennia-old historical heritage into the future.

Project and Design Features

The protective roof project covering the excavation area in Karahantepe will protect a 5,000 square meter area. The design is elegant and environmentally harmonious, with a wavy form that organically integrates with the natural landscape. Additionally, the structure features openings that provide natural ventilation and a minimized number of columns, combining both aesthetics and functionality. This design ensures the preservation of the area while enhancing the comfort of the interior space.

The project also offers flexibility for growth and adaptation, allowing for future excavation works to be accommodated and providing space for expansion. In this way, both the traces of the past will be preserved, and a space will be created that can support future archaeological activities.

Historical Significance of Karahantepe

Karahantepe, located in Şanlıurfa, is an important archaeological site that sheds light on human history. Dating back to the 9th millennium BC, the site has revealed numerous significant findings. Notably, public buildings adorned with human and animal figures highlight the historical value of the region. Most recently, the discovery of a wild donkey figure last summer further emphasized the historical importance of the area.

Purpose of the Project and Its Contribution to the Future

Minister Ersoy emphasized that Karahantepe was a shared heritage of humanity, and the government is determined to preserve this heritage for future generations. Through this project, Karahantepe’s history will be preserved using modern methods, increasing both the cultural and tourist value of the region.

The Future Heritage Project will not only protect Karahantepe’s unique history but also ensure the sustainability of ongoing excavation work in the area.
