Breaking News: María Corina Machado Wins the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize

The world’s attention was on Oslo today as the Nobel Committee announced the winner of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize. The prestigious award has been given to former Venezuelan National Assembly member María Corina Machado.

The Nobel Peace Prize will be officially presented to Machado during the traditional ceremony on December 10 in Oslo. While all other Nobel Prizes are awarded in Stockholm, the Peace Prize has always been presented in the Norwegian capital, highlighting its symbolic and diplomatic significance.

Who Is María Corina Machado

María Corina Machado studied industrial engineering at Andrés Bello Catholic University and furthered her career at the Instituto de Estudios Superiores de Administración. In 2002, she co-founded Súmate, a civil society organization focused on election monitoring and citizen rights, marking her first step into politics.

Between 2011 and 2014, Machado represented Miranda in the Venezuelan National Assembly. She ran in the 2012 presidential primaries as an opposition candidate but lost to Henrique Capriles. In 2014, she became a leading figure in protests against the Maduro government.

She is also the founder and national coordinator of Vente Venezuela, a liberal political movement established in 2013. In October 2023, she won the opposition primaries with more than 92 percent of the vote, but the Maduro government barred her from holding public office for 15 years. Constitutional experts called this move unlawful.

During the 2024 presidential election, Edmundo González Urrutia replaced her as the opposition candidate and won with 70 percent of the vote.

Machado was named one of the BBC’s 100 Women of 2018. In 2024, she received both the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought and the Václav Havel Human Rights Prize. In 2025, she was listed among Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People.
