Historic European Union Decision: Support to Israel Halted

European Commission Moves Against Israel’s Policies
The European Union has announced tough measures in response to Israel’s violations of international law. Restrictions will be introduced in trade agreements, and sanctions will target far-right Israeli ministers. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen declared that bilateral support for Israel wouldl be suspended.
All Payments Frozen
Von der Leyen explained that the Commission will propose sanctions against extremist Israeli ministers and partially suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement, including trade-related areas. She also stressed that bilateral financial support to Israel will stop, while cooperation with Israeli civil society and the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial will continue.
Commission Acts Within Its Own Powers
In the past, the Commission raised the idea of restricting Israel’s access to leading EU research funds, but failed to gain full backing from member states. This time, von der Leyen said the Commission will act within its own authority.
She also announced the launch of a “Palestine Donor Group” next month, along with a special mechanism dedicated to the reconstruction of Gaza.
