The number of theater audiences in Turkey increased by 15.2 percent

THEATERS IN TURKEY

The number of theatergoers in Turkey increased by 15.2% in the 2022-2023 season compared to the previous season, reaching a total of 6,279,512 people. This information was released in the “Cinema and Performing Arts Statistics” bulletin by the Turkish Statistical Institute for 2023.

Cinema Statistics

According to data from the General Directorate of Cinema of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism:

– In 2023, a total of 371 films were released in Turkey, with 147 domestic and 224 foreign films.

– There were 2,618 cinema halls with a total seating capacity of 286,603.

– The number of cinema-goers was recorded at 31,005,844, with 13,716,005 attending domestic films and 17,289,839 attending foreign films.

Theater Statistics

For the 2022-2023 season:

– There were 808 theater halls with a seating capacity of 326,713.

– The number of theatergoers increased by 15.2% to 6,279,512.

– The number of plays performed decreased by 1.7% to 8,223.

– Attendance for translated plays increased by 37.5% to 1,726,003, while attendance for original plays rose by 8.5% to 4,553,509.

– The number of children’s play performances increased by 20.2% to 11,551, and adult play performances rose by 2.2% to 15,848.

– Attendance for children’s plays increased by 25.1%, and attendance for adult plays increased by 9.8%.

Opera and Ballet Statistics

For the 2022-2023 season:

– Opera and ballet performances, conducted by the General Directorate of Opera and Ballet, were held in six cities.

– The number of opera and ballet attendees increased by 30.2%, even though the number of performances decreased by 15%.

Orchestra, Choir, and Ensemble Statistics

For the 2022-2023 season, the General Directorate of Fine Arts oversaw:

– 6 orchestras, 11 choirs, and 10 ensembles.

– Attendance for these performances increased by 47.1% to 266,023.

– Orchestra attendance increased by 62.3%, choir attendance decreased by 19.7%, and ensemble attendance increased by 143.7% to 76,479.
