Scorching Heat Wave Grips Turkey

Turkey is bracing for an intense heatwave, with temperatures expected to rise well above seasonal norms. The General Directorate of Meteorology has issued a warning that temperatures will increase starting from the western regions, reaching 6 to 12 degrees Celsius above average across the country.

Prof. Dr. Orhan Şen’s Urgent Warning

Meteorology expert Prof. Dr. Orhan Şen appeared live on CNN Türk, urging people not to go outside on Tuesday and Wednesday, stressing that these will be the hottest days for Istanbul, with temperatures expected to hit 35 to 36 degrees Celsius. He emphasized that this is the third major heatwave of the season, and standing outside for more than ten minutes could become unbearable.

Stay Indoors – Especially Vulnerable Groups

Prof. Şen warned against scheduling any outdoor activities on these days, especially for those with heart conditions or chronic illnesses, noting that such extreme heat increases the risk of serious health issues and even death.

Extreme Heat Expected Across Most Regions

Aside from the Central and Eastern Black Sea regions, the entire country is expected to experience extreme heat. Most areas will see temperatures above 35 degrees, with southeastern provinces such as Şanlıurfa, Kilis, Gaziantep, and Diyarbakır possibly exceeding 45 degrees. These measurements are for shaded areas—actual “felt” temperatures will be even higher.

In Aydın, Manisa, and Muğla, temperatures could reach 43–44 degrees, while Edirne is also forecast to hit over 40 degrees. Even the Inner Aegean will see highs of 42–43 degrees.

Four to Five Days of Intense Heat Nationwide

For the next four to five days, nearly every city in Turkey—except for places like Sinop, Samsun, Trabzon, and Rize—is expected to experience daily highs above 35 degrees Celsius.

“Feels Like a Blow Dryer” Effect Coming

Abdullah Macit, weather forecast specialist from the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, explained that the heat is being driven by the Basra Low Pressure System, and the humidity will drop significantly, making the air feel even hotter. He warned that it will feel like standing in front of a blow dryer when stepping outside.
