Restaurants Push Back Against High Commissions

Restaurants across Turkey are taking a stand against soaring costs and what they describe as excessive commission fees demanded by online food delivery platforms. To respond, they’re launching a nationwide 20% discount campaign, encouraging customers to order directly from restaurants instead of apps.

TÜRES (All Restaurateurs and Tourism Association) President Ramazan Bingöl spoke to CNBC-e’s Emre Eser and announced the start of the campaign, emphasizing widespread frustration across the sector.

“We Are Facing an Unspoken Protest”

Bingöl explained that the industry had already been hit hard by high prices and recent food-poisoning incidents, which severely affected public confidence.
“We are witnessing an unspoken protest,” he said.

He added that some restaurant businesses had recently seen up to 90% loss in customers due to these food safety concerns.

But according to Bingöl, this isn’t the only problem: restaurants have long been battling online platform commissions that can reach up to 40%. He stated that the sector wants these rates to be brought down to reasonable levels, noting that a tough struggle against platforms has already begun.

“A One-Lira Order Leaves Us With Just 53 Kuruş”

Bingöl urged customers to support restaurants directly:

“People should stop ordering from online apps. Let them come and buy from us at a cheaper price. Right now, on a one-lira order, only 53 kuruş stays with us; the rest goes to the platform. That cost is ultimately passed on to the customer. With this campaign, we want to stop that. The customer will now pay 20% less.”

Possible Sector-Wide Boycott

Bingöl also issued a clear warning to online delivery companies:

“I’m calling out to online platforms: either you sit down with us and lower commission rates, or 300,000 restaurants and cafés will leave the system.”

He said restaurants are considering launching a full boycott and expect public support. The sector is also preparing to build and use its own independent ordering systems.
