6.0 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes the Mediterranean: Tremors Felt Across Western Turkey

In the early hours of the morning, residents across western Turkey were jolted awake by a powerful earthquake that struck in the Mediterranean Sea. According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.0 and occurred at 01:51 AM, approximately 155 kilometers off the coast of Datça in the Muğla province.

Widespread Tremors Across the Region

Despite the offshore epicenter, the tremors were strongly felt in many provinces, including Muğla, Antalya, Aydın, İzmir, Denizli, and even as far as Mersin. The quake struck at a depth of 20 kilometers beneath the sea, making it powerful enough to be widely felt but, fortunately, less likely to cause severe damage on land.

Official Statements: No Reported Damage So Far

Shortly after the earthquake, Muğla Governor İdris Akbıyık shared an update on social media, assuring the public that damage assessments were underway. “So far, no adverse incidents have been reported,” he noted, providing some relief to the concerned residents.

Similarly, Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change Minister Murat Kurum confirmed that no structural damage had been identified. “There are no signs of destruction or injuries at this time. Our teams are continuing their on-site inspections to ensure everyone’s safety,” the minister said in his statement.
