A Hero in the Driver’s Seat: Quick-Thinking Bus Attendant Saves 40 Lives

A Routine Journey Turns Into a Life-or-Death Moment: What started as a typical intercity trip from Ankara to Antalya quickly turned into a terrifying ordeal for 40 passengers aboard a long-distance bus. Just as the vehicle was cruising along Dumlupınar Boulevard, the driver, Hasan A., suddenly lost consciousness behind the wheel. Panic erupted inside the bus as the massive vehicle continued moving without control.
One Second Away from Disaster
Ozan Ceylan, a 26-year-old bus attendant who had been working with the company for two years, immediately noticed something was wrong. Realizing that the driver had passed out, he didn’t hesitate. In the chaos of passengers screaming in fear, he climbed into the driver’s seat, took control of the steering wheel, and slowly brought the bus to a safe stop. His ability to stay calm under pressure not only prevented a crash but also potentially saved dozens of lives.
From Panic to Relief
As the bus came to a halt, passengers were still visibly shaken. Thankfully, a doctor who happened to be in a following car rushed to help the unconscious driver, who was later transported to a hospital. With a backup driver arriving shortly after, the passengers continued their journey to Antalya—safe and sound.
A Humble Hero
In interviews afterward, Ozan Ceylan recounted the moment: “The driver’s blood pressure dropped, and he passed out. I had to act immediately. I gently hit the brakes and tried to keep everyone calm.” After stopping the bus and pulling it safely to the roadside, he turned on the hazard lights, engaged the handbrake, and called for help.
His quick response didn’t go unnoticed. The bus company rewarded Ozan with a financial bonus, acknowledging the role he played in preventing what could have been a catastrophic accident.
“It Could Have Been Much Worse”
Reflecting on the experience, Ozan emphasized that his first thought was the safety of the passengers. “There were 40 lives in that bus,” he said. “If I hadn’t acted quickly, the bus could have rolled over or gone off the road. It was heading toward the embankment.”
What could have been a devastating accident became a story of courage and fast thinking. Ozan Ceylan is now being praised across the country—not just as a bus attendant, but as a true lifesaver.
