The legal dispute surrounding Turkey’s use of the “TurkAegean” trademark in its tourism campaigns has entered a new phase. In response to Greece’s opposition, the USPTO Trademark Trial and Appeal Board has requested Turkey to provide further explanations and documents about the term “TurkAegean.”
Greece’s Opposition Initiated the Case
According to reports, Greece’s objection in 2023 led to the initiation of the legal case. Greek authorities argue that the “TurkAegean” trademark represents Turkey’s broader strategic goals. In this context, the USPTO has asked Turkey to provide a detailed justification for why the term was chosen to promote local tourism.
Turkey Given 20 Days to Respond
The U.S. authorities, in their communication with the Turkish Tourism Promotion and Development Agency (TGA), emphasized the need for documentation regarding the selection of the “TurkAegean” term. If Turkey fails to respond, the matter could be taken to court, and Turkey might face sanctions. Turkey has been given 20 days to submit the requested clarifications.

Experts suggest that the legal disagreement between the parties could take an additional 2-3 years to resolve. The arguments and documents presented by both sides are expected to play a decisive role in the outcome.
