After G7 summit Ursula von der Leyen says Taliban will be held accountable on human rights

After the G7 leaders meeting European Union Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said “The focus of the meeting was to work together to evacuate people and ensure their safety” adding recognition of Taliban was not the subject of the meeting.

The leaders of the countries with the 7 largest economies of the Western world discussed Afghanistan. In a joint statement after the Summit, G7 leaders called on the Taliban to allow those who want to leave the country after August 31. “We will work with our allies and the countries of the region on Afghanistan through the UN and the G20,” the final declaration said.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Drahi said: “G20 countries such as Turkey, Russia, China can help the G7 with Afghanistan. International organizations’ access to Afghanistan should continue after August 31.”

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said it was impossible for them to continue evacuations without the United States. She added that it was important that Kabul airport was operated by civilians.”

G7 leaders called on the Taliban to respect human rights by ensuring the safety of civilians.
