In Sapanca, a family staying at a bungalow discovered a hidden camera in their room, causing public concern. A security camera expert explained how such devices could be easily detected and warned people to avoid places they don’t know or trust.
Camera Found Hidden Inside Lightbulb in Vacation Rental
A family from Istanbul visiting Sapanca for the Ramadan holiday noticed a hidden camera inside a lightbulb, pointed directly at the bedroom and jacuzzi area of their rented bungalow. The family reported it to the police, who seized all electronic devices in the bungalow for investigation.
The incident caused widespread panic, with many people asking, “How can you detect hidden cameras?” and “Where are they usually hidden?”
Not the First Time This Has Happened
The experts who has worked in the security camera industry for 25 years, said such cases were becoming more common with the advancement of technology.
“When technology is in the hands of good people, it’s useful. But in the hands of malicious individuals, it causes serious harm. This isn’t the first case like this. Similar incidents have occurred in hotel rooms, vacation rentals, and bungalows” he said.
How to Detect Hidden Cameras Using a Phone
The expert explained that people could use their smartphones to check for hidden cameras:
“The easiest and most practical method to detect a hidden camera is with your phone. Smartphone cameras can detect infrared (IR) light, which is invisible to the naked eye.”
For example:
- Point a TV remote at your smartphone camera while pressing a button. The infrared light will be visible on your screen.
- When entering a room, turn off all the lights, then use your phone’s flashlight. If a hidden camera lens is present, it may reflect light.
- Alternatively, open your camera app and scan the room slowly — infrared lights may appear on the screen even if you can’t see them with your eyes.
Where Are Hidden Cameras Usually Placed?
Karaaslan warned people to be especially cautious of:
- Electrical outlets
- Motion sensors (PIR detectors)
- Smoke alarms
- Wall clocks
- Curtain rods or moldings
- Even inside heaters or boilers, in some extreme cases
Some Cameras Have Live Streaming Capabilities
“These hidden cameras don’t just record — many can stream live over the internet,” the exppert said. “That’s what makes them even more dangerous. The person who installed the device can watch you in real-time.”

The experts urged people to:
- Avoid places they don’t trust
- Use the phone methods he described to scan rooms
- Be aware that professional hidden camera detectors exist, but not everyone carries them
