As of 2023, number of libraries In Turkey reaches 48,733

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) announced the “library statistics” for 2023. According to these statistics, by the end of last year, there were a total of 48,733 libraries operating in the country, including 1 Presidential Library, 1 National Library, 1,295 public libraries, 627 university libraries, and 46,809 libraries in formal and non-formal education institutions.
The number of books increased by 32.6% compared to the previous year. The number of books in the Presidential Library reached 2,532,299. This number increased by 3.5% in the National Library to 1,689,166, by 2.7% in university libraries to 21,666,947, by 4.8% in public libraries to 24,204,501, and by 56.9% in formal and non-formal education institution libraries to 68,970,463 compared to 2022.
The number of people benefiting from public libraries increased by 25.3% compared to the previous year, reaching 33,561,919. The number of registered members of public libraries rose by 11.2% in the same period, reaching 6,193,356.
The number of university libraries in Turkey is calculated to be 627, with 477 in public universities and 150 in private universities. The number of e-books in university libraries increased by 23.4% compared to the previous year, reaching 118,373,442. The number of registered members of university libraries rose by 5.3% to 4,199,285, and the number of non-book materials increased by 8.8% to 1,662,552.
Last year, 71,200 books were published in the country. The number of published materials increased by 18.4% compared to 2022, reaching 99,025. When examining the materials by subject, it was seen that 29.9% of the published materials were academic, 19.9% were educational, and 17.6% were adult fiction literature.
