While we are roasting with ayyamibahur (heat wave), another heat wave is also coming from Africa. At the end of the week, the air temperature will rise by 4-8 degrees above seasonal norms along with the African temperatures that will affect the entire country.

Weather Forecaster of the General Directorate of Meteorology, announced that the heatwave from Africa would affect Turkey and temperatures will be 4 to 8 degrees above seasonal norms in the inland regions over the weekend. He told media the following: “With the heat wave coming from Africa, temperatures will be between 4 and 8 degrees Celsius in inland regions, and 2-4 degrees Celsius above seasonal norms on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts and Southeastern Anatolia. We predict that the temperatures felt in the coastal part of the Mediterranean region along with high humidity will be even more.”

IT WILL LAST 3 DAYS

“The air temperature in Istanbul today will be around 35 degrees, and on the weekend it will be around 33-34 degrees. It is 34 degrees today in Ankara but we expect it to reach 39 degrees on Sunday. The air temperature in Izmir today and Saturday is 36 degrees. Edirne will be 40 degrees today. Tekirdağ is 34 degrees today. The weather in Diyarbakir is 41 degrees today, but it will rise to 43-44 degrees on Monday. Antalya is 33 degrees today, but the felt temperature will be 40 degrees due to humidity. The provinces where the weather is warmest today are Diyarbakır and Batman with 41 degrees. The lowest temperature will be Van with 28.”

WHAT DOES AYYAM I BAHUR MEAN, WHAT IS IT?

Ayyami bahur, which came to our language from Arabic, is used to express the hottest and most sultry days of the summer months. In the Northern hemisphere, we see it between July and September and in the southern hemisphere this occurs between January and March.

Names derived from this term are still used in modern European languages such as Dogdays in the English language and Hundstage in German etc…) The term eyyamibahur, which is used in Turkish, has lost its usefulness to a great extent, and instead terms such as “hell heat, African heat” are used.
