YK Enerji, a joint subsidiary of Limak Holding and IC Holding, seems to be determined to continue cutting the trees in the Akbelen Forest located in Ikizkoy for a lignite coal mine. As the resistance of the villagers continued, it turned out that Ebru Özdemir, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Limak Holding, (allegedly slaughtering the nature as expressed in the media) was a member of the Turkish Branch of the Foundation for the Protection of Natural Life. After the incident, the foundation is said to have taken action for said person.

While the tree slaughter initiated by Limak Holding and IC Holding’s joint subsidiary YK Energy to expand the mine site in Akbelen Forest, located in Ikizkoy, Milas district of Muğla, has been going on for days, security forces are intervening harshly to the people who want to prevent the massacre.

“ENVIRONMENTALIST” IS OUT

In the meantime, it turned out that Ebru Özdemir, the Chairman of the Board of Limak Holding, which carried out tree cutting to expand the mine site, was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Turkish Branch of the Wildlife Conservation Foundation (WWF Turkey).

THE FOUNDATION MADE A STATEMENT

After it was seen that Limak Holding Chairman Ebru Özdemir, the daughter of Nihat Özdemir, one of the leading bosses of Turkey, was a member of the board of trustees of WWF Turkey, the foundation published a statement.

In the statement of the foundation, it was announced that said person’s “professional activities did not match the principles of the foundation” and that the procedures for officially ending her membership of the board of trustees had been initiated.

In the statement of the foundation it said, “Limak Holding Chairman of the Board of Directors Ebru Özdemir’s professional activities do not comply with the principles of our foundation and are contrary to our foundation charter, the procedures for officially resigning from the board of trustees are continuing. As WWF-Turkey (Natural Life Protection Foundation) we stand by the struggle of civil society stakeholders and local people against the ongoing mining field opening works in Ikizkoy-Akbelen Forest. We will continue to express our demands from the authorities for the urgent termination of mine site opening activities.”
