The hearing of the case in which Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem Imamoğlu is being tried for allegedly insulting YSK (Supreme Election Board) members is today… Strict measures were taken and vehicle entrances to the Anatolian Palace of Justice were prohibited. Those who have a case can show documents and enter the courthouse.

(Note: Imamoglu on the other says he did not use any insult words for the YSK but his words clearly targeted the Interior Minister, in reply to insult expressions targeting him by the minister.)

The trial of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem Imamoğlu for allegedly insulting the members of the Supreme Election Board is being held today. The previous hearing was held on November 11 and the case was adjourned until today. Like previous hearings, Ekrem Imamoglu will not attend the hearing, which is expected to start at 11.00 today at the Anatolian Palace of Justice in Istanbul.

According to the assessment of some impartial political experts, this case is being used by the administration to sentence Imamoglu to more than 4 years and thus make him banned from politics.

DOES THE GOVERNMENT WANT TO PREVENT POSSIBLE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDACY OF IMAMOGLU?

The same experts, however, also state the following: This way, the government wants to take Imamoglu from the Istanbul Mayor’s Office and replace him with an AK Party member of the city council. It is commented that just as the elections are approaching, the government plans to take advantage of the opportunities of the municipality such as financial capabilities to increase its vote share.

On the other hand, it is also suggested that the government also wants to prevent the possibility of Imamoglu becoming a presidential candidate as the 2023 elections approach. They say the reason is if he comes up against Erdogan as a candidate, it seems that Imamoglu’s chances of winning are quite strong, according to the results of many reliable polls.
