Communication in Turkey

Turkey has gone through a very fast development period in terms of communication during the last 20 years. From the time when people had to wait for hours for a simple international call connection, the country has reached a stage where it is equipped with the best up-to-date technologies in Europe.

Communication: Number of GSM subscribers rose to 63,1 million people, and number of GSM phones to 87 million. Number of fixed line subscribers rose to 18,2 million. Penetration rate in fixed was 25,8 percent according to the population and 102,9 percent according to the number of households.

Total time of talking climbed to 48,5 billion minutes from 35,5 million minutes in 2005, corresponding to an increase by 36,6 percent within two years of time. Broadband subscribers reached 5,3 million. Penetration rate is about 7,2 percent according to population and 28,6 percent according to the number of households. Turkey outdoes only Mexico within OECD member countries in term of  its broadband services.

Internet users are more than 20 million people with a penetration rate of 28,37 percent. Officials from the Ministry of Communications estimate the number of home computers around 8 million while the computer literacy has increased to 32 million people.
