ERDOGAN AND TURKEY

As Turkey takes a step towards general elections, experts say that according to the law, the only condition for Erdogan to run for the third time in a row is an early election (before June 2023)

Most recently, the Supreme Electoral Council (YSK) had left the question about whether Erdogan could run for a third time “unanswered” and, pointed to the election calendar. Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag on the other hand said, “There are no obstacles to Erdogan’s candidacy, he will have a second candidacy in 2023″.

THEY WILL BRING THE PROPOSAL TO THE PARLIAMENT

A CHP deputy, Erdoğan TOPRAK made following comments regarding the issue, criticizing the Minister of Justice:

“Lawyers can discuss whether President Erdogan or another candidate can be a candidate, put forward legal grounds. However, the statement of an opinion of a politician in the position of the “minister of justice” of the government on this issue is tantamount to putting pressure on the judiciary. We (opposition) are marching to power. They are trying to create the perception in people’s eyes that they are victimized, by drawing us into artificial discussions. It was our party that lifted the political ban on President Erdogan (before he became PM of Turkey), we are not pursuing a political ban on anyone. Even if it is obvious that the president cannot run for a third time with the constitutional amendment they have made, the YSK will make the final decision on this issue. The fact that the Minister of Justice put himself in the place of the YSK and made a decision on Erdogan’s candidacy is nothing more than putting the Supreme Judiciary under pressure. The government decides on an early election, submits its proposal to the Parliament, and if it is accepted, President Erdogan may run in the election held by a decision of the Parliament.”

ALREADY PRESSURE ON YSK

“Of course, it will be evaluated by the leaders at the ‘six party table’ whether it is preferable to be supported by the opposition to open the way for Erdogan’s candidacy for the third time with an early election decision to be taken by the ruling alliance 15-20 days before the normal calendar of the election, or the election should be held at the normal time. Efforts to pressure the YSK already are doomed to be fruitless.”
