Did former president Abdullah Gül call President Erdoğan to say he would establish a Party?

Following the claims that the 11th President of Turkey, Abdullah Gül would form a new party, a new claim has emerged. It is alleged that Gül called President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to assure him that his initiative to form a party would not harm the AK Party and that he had no such intention.

Recent rumors in Ankara’s political circles suggest that Abdullah Gül plans to form a new party. According to these rumors, Gül has informed President Erdoğan that his goal is to unite fragmented parties under one umbrella and that he is preparing to establish a new party in this context. The claim is that the leaders of the DEVA Party (Ali Babacan), the Future Party (Ahmet Davutoğlu), and the Felicity Party (Temel Karamollaoğlu) plan to merge their parties under a single entity. It is said that Abdullah Gül, Turkey’s 11th President, would lead this new formation.

Additionally, it is claimed that Gül and his close circle are positioning themselves for the post-Erdoğan period. Gül reportedly views the new party and politics positively and even expressed his desire to run as a presidential candidate in the next election, sharing this thought with President Erdoğan.

“He May Form a Party, but He Cannot Be Our Candidate”

If the Parliament does not decide to hold early elections, President Erdoğan cannot run again due to constitutional limits. Gül is said to desire to run for the presidency, potentially appealing to AK Party voters. There are even claims that Gül wants to be the AK Party’s candidate and has communicated this to his close associates.

However, sources within the AK Party do not take these claims seriously. They commented, “He may form a party, but he cannot be the AK Party’s candidate.”
