Karatay Chamber of Agriculture President Rıfat Kavuneker emphasized that dry farming was no longer feasible in this water-dependent region, and urgent measures are needed to bring water from other basins to sustain agricultural activities.

Burdur: Drought-Induced Diseases in Crops

Burdur, along with Antalya and Isparta, has experienced significant effects of global warming, with the year 2024 expected to be worse than 2021, which saw the lowest wheat production in the region’s history. The lack of sufficient rainfall has led to drought stress, causing diseases in cereals, pulses, and industrial plants. Anatolian sage production has been particularly hit, with a 60% reduction in yield compared to the previous year.

Sakarya: Hazelnut Yields Expected to Drop

Sakarya is facing a potential decrease in hazelnut yields due to excessive heat and drought. With June’s rainfall significantly lower than the previous year, many hazelnuts are falling from the branches before ripening. Sakarya Commodity Exchange President stressed the need for efficient water use and the adoption of smart farming practices to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Isparta: Rose Production Impacted by Heat

Isparta, a region known for its rose production, is experiencing reduced yields due to excessive heat. Isparta Chamber of Commerce and Industry President noted that the high temperatures are negatively affecting both agricultural production and industrial activities, leading to a decline in productivity and product quality.

Izmir: Frost and Heat Damage Grapes

In the Aegean region, which dominates Turkey’s seedless dried grape production, grape yields have been affected by frost, hail, and excessive heat. While the yield is expected to be slightly higher than the previous year, it will still fall short of the average. The lack of stock from the previous season further complicates the situation for producers.
