As global tensions rise with the Israel-Iran conflict, oil prices are climbing fast—and so are fuel prices at the pump. Turkish citizens are now facing steeper fuel costs, and naturally, the amount of tax embedded in those prices is under renewed scrutiny. Renowned Tax Expert Ozan Bingöl recently shared a breakdown of how much we’re actually paying in taxes every time we fill up our tanks.

The Real Cost Behind Fuel Prices

According to Bingöl, the latest round of price hikes has pushed the price of diesel in Ankara to 55.55 Turkish Lira per liter. But here’s the catch: out of that amount, a hefty 20.48 TL is purely tax. That includes both the Special Consumption Tax (ÖTV) and the Value Added Tax (KDV).

To give this more perspective, imagine filling up a standard 60-liter fuel tank. The total cost for that would be around 2,104 TL just for the fuel itself. However, when taxes are factored in, you’re actually paying an additional 1,229 TL in taxes. That brings the full cost of a tank of diesel to 3,333 TL.

Why This Matters Now

With global markets on edge and fuel prices swinging wildly, the share of taxes in Turkey’s pump prices is sparking debate. For many citizens, it’s not just about international politics or oil markets—it’s about affordability and transparency in how prices are structured.

Bingöl’s detailed analysis sheds light on a crucial point: a significant portion of what we pay for fuel doesn’t go toward the fuel itself, but toward taxes. At a time when many are feeling the financial strain, understanding this breakdown is more important than ever.
