Travel traffic has begun across Turkey as millions of people head to their hometowns and holiday destinations for the Eid al-Adha holiday. Around 15 million people are expected to travel during the holiday period, creating heavy congestion on major highways and in popular coastal resorts.

Heavy Traffic on the Anatolian Motorway

Long vehicle queues formed on the Anatolian Motorway, especially in the provinces of Bolu, Düzce, Kocaeli, and Sakarya. Traffic heading toward Ankara intensified significantly as holidaymakers departed from Istanbul and nearby cities.

Known as “Istanbul’s gateway to Anatolia,” the motorway saw a major increase in vehicle numbers, with traffic jams reportedly stretching as far as the Akyazı section.

Drivers traveling from Istanbul and surrounding provinces toward their hometowns or holiday resorts continued to move slowly through the region throughout the day.

Coastal Resorts Expect Massive Crowds

At the same time, southern tourism hotspots such as Bodrum, Fethiye, and Antalya are experiencing an intense influx of visitors.

Authorities and local tourism representatives expect extremely crowded conditions during the holiday period, with beaches, hotels, restaurants, and entertainment venues expected to reach full capacity.

Local Businesses Benefit from Holiday Tourism

The surge in domestic tourism is also bringing economic benefits to local businesses. Hotels, restaurants, cafes, shops, and tourism operators in popular destinations are preparing for one of the busiest holiday periods of the year.

For many local tradespeople and tourism workers, the holiday season is seen as an important economic boost at the beginning of the summer tourism period.
