Europeans find solution for natural gas crisis, in Turkey! Boosting demand for carpets and blankets

With Russia’s natural gas restrictions, European countries have found the remedy in Batman’s mohair products. Hand-produced mohair carpets and blankets in Hasankeyf enjoy great demand.

The demand for mohair carpets produced by hand in Hasankeyf, the historical district of Batman, has increased due to the natural gas crisis in Europe. Stating that all foreign tourists who come to Hasankeyf from all over the world show interest in mohair carpets, a business person said, “I worked with my uncle in 1994 and he taught me this profession. I have been weaving since 1994. I have been actively weaving rugs for the last 12 years. This profession is our ancestral tradition. The people of Hasankeyf lived in caves in the castle even in 1960s to the 70s. At that time, there were about 700 to 800 weaving looms. I am currently weaving rugs in Hasankeyf. There are similar looms in Siirt, there are weavers in Batman. But 700 people are not actively doing this work. We are doing our best. We are weaving mohair wool rugs unique to Hasankeyf.”

WE HAVE SENT A LOT OF MOHAIR CARPETS TO EUROPEAN COUNTRIES

“We are also receiving orders, “the weaver said, “Thanks God, this year we have sent our mohair carpets to European countries a lot. Especially we have sold large mohair carpet blankets to European countries. We sent more to Germany because of this natural gas conversation. All foreign tourists from all over the world buy these mohair products from us.”

OUR CARPETS ARE BOTH NATURAL AND HEALTHY

He went on to say, “They buy our mohair carpets because they are both natural and healthy. We use them in the same way. We step barefoot or we put them under our beds. We lay a thin duvet cover on the mohair carpet and lie down on it. I weave our small size mohair carpets in 1 day. There are stages after weaving. We remove the wool with wire brushes, wash them, shape them while they are damp. I prepare an average of 2 mohair carpets a day. Currently, I have carpets used from the 1960s. I give a 5-year warranty on the mohair carpets we make.”
