Forest Fires Update: What’s Happening? Minister Yumaklı Breaks It Down
If you’ve been following the news, you know it’s been a tense few days with forest fires breaking out in different parts of Turkey. Thankfully, there’s some encouraging news.
Agriculture and Forestry Minister İbrahim Yumaklı gave an update today from Sakarya’s Taraklı district. Here’s the latest in simple terms:
Fires Mostly Under Control
The major fire on the Bilecik–Sakarya border is now largely under control. Same goes for the fire in Manisa Akhisar. Neither is currently posing a serious threat, which is a big relief.
One Hundred Fifty Fires in Two Days
Firefighting teams have been incredibly busy, responding to one hundred fifty separate fires in just the past two days. It has been an intense effort across the country.
Ongoing Efforts by Air and Land
Crews are continuing cooling efforts in both major areas. Teams are working by land and air, making sure no hot spots reignite. These operations are expected to continue for several more days.
Rain Helped a Lot
Rainfall this morning over the Sakarya-Bilecik region helped slow the spread of the fire. Minister Yumaklı called it a blessing, saying it made their job much easier.
Fifty-Eight Kilometers of Road Built Overnight
In one of the most impressive efforts, teams managed to build about fifty-eight kilometers of forest road in just six hours overnight. The terrain was steep, full of cliffs and valleys, making it extremely difficult. This gives you an idea of just how massive and challenging the firefighting operation has been.
So while the fires haven’t been fully extinguished yet, the worst seems to be over for now. Crews are staying on the job, and the situation is improving steadily.
