Frightening statement on possible Istanbul earthquake: 600,000 homes at risk of collapse!

On the anniversary of the Great Marmara Earthquake, Minister of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, Murat Kurum, made a striking statement regarding the potential Istanbul earthquake. Minister Kurum said, “We have observed that in the event of a possible earthquake, 600,000 homes are at risk of collapse.”

Minister Kurum stated, “Today, we have completed our risk assessments in all 39 districts of Istanbul. We have found that 20% of the city’s total housing, approximately 1.5 million homes, are in an unhealthy condition. We observed that 600,000 homes are at risk of collapse in the event of a possible earthquake, and we identified that 2.5 million of our citizens are exposed to this risk. Through the ‘Half From Us’ campaign, we will collectively prepare Istanbul for earthquakes and all other disasters as soon as possible.”

On the 25th anniversary of the August 17, 1999 earthquake, Minister Kurum made an assessment regarding the ongoing efforts related to a potential Istanbul earthquake. Minister Kurum emphasized that Istanbul, having hosted many civilizations throughout history and being one of the world’s largest cities, has always held strategic importance. He stated, “However, there is a great risk, like the reality of an earthquake, looming over this beautiful city. We are working to make Istanbul a safer, more livable city. We aim to build an Istanbul where our children, descendants, and future generations can live securely.”
