In the United States, some 2024 Chevrolet Corvette models have been facing a serious safety issue. Several owners reported that their sports cars caught fire while refueling, leading General Motors to launch a recall covering more than 23,000 vehicles.

Real Cases Raise Concerns

One shocking case came from Michigan, where Shawn Conner’s Corvette burst into flames at a gas station in June. Within minutes, the $100,000 sports car was reduced to ashes. Social media footage of the fire quickly went viral. Reports soon followed from other Corvette owners, and even a GM test vehicle reportedly caught fire the same way.

What Went Wrong With the Corvette

After months of investigation, General Motors explained the cause. In certain models, a cooling fan may continue running even when the engine is turned off. If fuel spills during refueling, the fan can spray it into the motor, triggering a fire.

23,000 High-Performance Models Recalled

Although the issue is rare, the potential danger is severe. GM has recalled over 23,000 Corvettes, including high-value Z06 and ZR1 editions priced above $100,000. As a temporary fix, the company has designed a fuel shield and will distribute the parts within weeks. Dealerships have also been ordered to halt sales of about 1,600 unsold Corvettes currently in stock.

Past Incidents Show Rare but Real Risks

Fueling-related fires are unusual, but not unheard of. Chrysler recalled 19,000 Dodge Durangos in 2009, and Nissan pulled back 192,000 vehicles in 2005 due to similar risks. Experts note that faulty fuel pumps can also increase the chance of such accidents.

GM’s Advice to Corvette Owners

GM urges Corvette drivers to always turn off the engine during refueling, make sure the pump nozzle is fully seated, and avoid topping off the tank after the automatic shut-off clicks. The company stressed that customer safety remains its top priority.
