High-level EU official: Many member countries expected to recognize the State of Palestine

Josep Borrell, the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union, said that many European Union countries were expected to recognize the State of Palestine by the end of May.

Josep Borrell, the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union, made statements during the breaks of the World Economic Forum special session in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia.

In his statement, Borrell expressed the expectation that many EU member states would recognize the State of Palestine by the end of May.

Borrell did not name the states. However, last week, a joint statement was issued by 4 countries on the subject at the EU Leaders Summit held in Brussels.

4 COUNTRIES SAY “WE ARE READY”

Leaders of Spain, Ireland, Slovenia, and Malta stated in the announcement that they were ready to recognize Palestine as a state ‘when conditions would be suitable’.

SWEDEN WAS THE FIRST EU MEMBER TO RECOGNIZE PALESTINE

Before joining the European Union, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Cyprus, Poland, and Romania had recognized Palestine as a state. Sweden, on the other hand, became the first EU member to recognize a Palestinian state in Western Europe after joining the union in 2014.
