ERDOGAN WOWS TO OPEN MARASH IN CYPRUS

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s statements on the status of Marash in Cyprus, followed by the statements of TRNC President Ersin Tatar, caused reactions from the EU, the United States and the United Kingdom and especially the Greek administration.

The President went to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus for Eid al-Adha holiday, where he revealed his surprise (announced  earlier). In his speech addressing the public, Erdogan announced that a “Presidential Palace and Public Garden” would be built in the area – as his promised surprise.

However, Erdogan also shared in same speech “life in Marash would start again. In light of works carried out in accordance with property rights, the doors of a new era would open in Marash, which would benefit everyone.”

In reply to these statements, Cypriot President Nikos Anastasiadis said concerned statements were “illegal and unacceptable”, while EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell expressed “deep concern” about the decision, saying it threatened peace talks.
