In Fethiye (Mugla) Heavy Rain Turns Roads into Lakes
In the Fethiye district of Muğla, heavy rain during the evening hours flooded roads and caused water damage in some homes and business
“A Month’s Rain in Just One Hour”
Fethiye, experiencing one of the driest periods in recent years, was hit with 53 kilograms of rain per square meter in just one hour on Thursday. Over six hours, this total reached 58 kilograms, and within 12 hours, 67.8 kilograms. The heaviest downpours occurred in the evening, with Municipal Deputy Mayor Doğuş Çelik, along with MUSKI (Muğla Water and Sewerage Administration), Public Works, and Zoning officers, overseeing on-site operations.
Last November, Fethiye received a total of 158.4 kilograms of rain throughout the month. In contrast, only 45.5 kilograms had fallen in the first 20 days of this November. Today’s rain alone exceeded the monthly average, bringing the total rainfall for November to 113.3 kilograms.
Classification of Rainfall Intensity
In meteorological terms:
- Rainfall between 0-2 mm/hour is considered “light,”
- 2-10 mm/hour is “moderate,”
- 10-50 mm/hour is “heavy,”
- Over 50 mm/hour is classified as “very heavy.”
Fethiye’s one-hour rainfall qualifies as “very heavy,” highlighting the extraordinary intensity of this weather event.
