Interior Minister Yerlikaya Warns: A 200,000 TL Fine for Ignoring Police Stop Orders
New Traffic Law Proposal Aims to End Dangerous High-Speed Escapes in Ankara and Across Turkey
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya shared a strong message after a dramatic incident in the Sincan district of Ankara. A motorcyclist identified as R.E.İ failed to comply with a police stop order and attempted to flee the scene. Police units from the Sincan District Police Department swiftly caught the driver, and an administrative fine was issued in accordance with Highways Traffic Law.
Yerlikaya emphasized that ignoring a police stop is not just a traffic violation but a serious public safety issue. He pointed out that the current fine of 2,167 TL is not enough to deter offenders. Over the last six years, such violations have caused the death of 9 police officers, injured 16 others, and resulted in the death of 29 civilians and injuries to 1,955 people.
The new Traffic Law Proposal seeks to change this situation drastically. According to Yerlikaya, anyone who ignores a stop order will face a 200,000 TL administrative fine. Their driver’s license will be suspended for 60 days, and their vehicle will be impounded for the same period.
Yerlikaya stated that this change aims to make offenders think twice before taking such dangerous actions and to prevent tragedies on Turkish roads.
