Last minute challenge from Barzani: “We are ready to die if necessary”
Even though the referendum is two days away and Turkey has declared it as illegal with a clear attitude, Barzani has not stepped back and said “we are ready, even if it’s death in the end”. Barzani gave this challenging statement to the VOA Barzani also said they wanted to reach an agreement with Baghdad under the guarantee of the international community.
Speaking to the VOA Kurdish Service, President Barzani commented about the White House’s request to “postpone the referendum”.
He said “We made a lot of effort to change the way the US thinks. What kind of sins are we committing by asking for independence? We told them let’s talk about how we can reach our goal. But they say do not hold the referendum and come and let’s talk. Well what shall we talk about? No guarantee is given. They say don’t do it, just postpone. The USA has been talking to us with the same language for 14 years.
We are not in 1960 and 1970. Now is the time to determine our own destiny. We do not want anyone to design a path for us. We are ready for this even if there is death in the end.
