British Travelers Flock to Turkey as the Lira Drops – Lira’s Fall Boosts Turkey’s Popularity
Thanks to the continued weakening of the Turkish lira against the pound, Marmaris has officially overtaken Bulgaria’s Sunny Beach to become the cheapest family holiday destination in Europe for UK tourists. According to the latest “Family Holiday Report” by the UK Post Office and travel giant TUI, Turkey is now offering the best value for money outside the Eurozone.
Marmaris Tops the Value Chart
The report compared prices across 16 popular European destinations, focusing on a “holiday basket” of ten essential tourist items including meals, drinks, sun cream, and insect repellent. Marmaris came out on top with a total cost of just £128.99, despite a 10.3% price increase compared to last year. Sunny Beach in Bulgaria followed closely at £129.47, while destinations in the Eurozone saw significant price hikes, with Mallorca topping the list with a 21.4% increase.
Strong Pound Offsets Local Price Hikes
Even with local prices rising due to inflation in Turkey, the strength of the pound means UK holidaymakers are still paying relatively little. According to Laura Plunkett from the Post Office Travel Money Department, British travelers are spending just 10% more than last year, making Turkey an even more appealing option for families on a budget.
Eurozone Destinations Struggle to Compete
Within the Eurozone, Portugal’s Algarve was the cheapest at £143.56, followed by Paphos in Cyprus at £144.44. At the other end of the spectrum, Ibiza remains the priciest destination, with a holiday basket costing a hefty £242.79.
Unexpected Costs Stretch Family Budgets
The report also shed light on the growing financial strain families face due to child-related holiday expenses. From ice creams and water park visits to beach toys, these extras are pushing budgets beyond their limits. On average, families reported going £323 over their planned spending, with extras in Marmaris costing about £179. In contrast, the same expenses in Ibiza can reach up to £290.
Currency Tips and Travel Advice
Travel experts recommend exchanging currency before flying, warning that airport exchange rates and overseas ATM fees can eat into holiday budgets. Chris Logan, TUI’s UK Commercial Director, highlighted that Turkey continues to offer unbeatable value, especially for luxury experiences. He also noted a surge in demand for Bulgarian resorts, encouraging last-minute travelers to act fast before availability runs out.
