Forest fires broke out in the early morning in the districts of Marmaris and Dalaman in Muğla. In the early hours, forest fires in Muğla’s Marmaris and Dalaman districts caused widespread alarm. A transformer explosion in Marmaris sparked one of the fires, which proved challenging to control.
Around 04:00 AM, a transformer exploded in the forested area near İnbükü Bay, close to the Marmaris-Datça highway, igniting a fire. Fueled by strong winds, the fire quickly spread. Ground crews, including forest workers and fire engines, began battling the blaze immediately, and as daylight broke, helicopters and planes joined the effort.
The fire, which was started by an energy transmission line, was brought under control after three hours. Cooling operations are ongoing in the affected area, and the gendarmerie has launched an investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, another fire broke out in the forested area of Kargınkürü neighborhood in Dalaman early in the morning. Villagers initially responded to the fire, which was subsequently extinguished by firefighting teams and forest workers before it could spread. In the early morning fires in Muğla, a total of 2 hectares of forested area was damaged.
FETHIYE & FOREST FIRES
Fethiye is a region with significant experience in dealing with forest fire disasters, as well. According to a study, between 1950 and 2000, Fethiye experienced a total of 1,208 forest fires, resulting in the destruction of 8,369 hectares of land.
– The highest number of fires was recorded in the Eşen Forest Management Chiefdom (36%), while the lowest was in the Göcek Forest Management Chiefdom (9%). – The largest burned area was also in Eşen (29%), with the smallest in the Güneydağ Forest Management Chiefdom (8%).
– Factors influencing fire distribution mainly included proximity to settlements, population density, tourism, agricultural activities, road routes, topography, and forest structure.
